Most home theater systems, will comprise of six speakers: two front speakers, two surround speakers, a center speaker and a sub woofer that is used for the lower sound ranges.
Depending on your budget there are two options to consider when looking for a home theater system that you would like. The expensive way is to purchase each system speaker separately or if you have a price range that you would like to go with you can buy a complete home theater system boxed and ready to install. Prices of which will vary considerably due to the make & manufacturer etc..There are lots of inexpensive home theater speaker sets on the market but you should always buy systems manufactured by well-known companies such as Sony, Klipsch, Bose, for example as they are known for good quality products and sound.
If you're thinking about taking a more serious approach and want to spend more time by customizing your home theater set up then you should do a little more research. Buying speakers separately has many advantages: it offers you the best in quality for the money you want to spend plus the other advantage is that you don't have to purchase the whole set at once. The front section of speakers in any set up should be the strongest members in your home theater. For instance, if your room is small get some bookshelf speakers. Bigger rooms will need larger speakers such as powerful floor-standing speakers. You will often hear that you need to have the exact speakers for surround and front. This is true, but in some cases you may want to mix them up a bit: movie sound systems don't use surround speakers as much as they use the front speakers. So, you can choose to have smaller speakers with less output for your surround setup, it won't make drastic differences anywhere but your wallet.
The case is different with our center speaker. It's a special speaker with unique frequency response. If it's possible, I would definitely have the center speaker from the same,manufacturer as the surround and front speakers. This unit is pf your home theater set up often overlooked. It is a very important component as this speaker is specifically used for voices and talking in the sound mix. The sub woofer is used to reproduce the lower end of sound frequencies and in Some cases optional especially when the front speakers are powerful enough make the house vibrate! So an additional sub woofer is not needed. However, in larger rooms you just can't do without them. Sub woofers do need lots of power input, and will have to have a separate power source. (these are known as "active sub woofers").
